Borussia Dortmund Secure Niko Kovac’s Future with Contract Extension Until 2029

Borussia Dortmund have officially extended Niko Kovac’s contract, keeping the Croatian manager at the club until June 30, 2029. The decision reflects the club’s confidence in his leadership and the progress made since he took charge in the spring of 2025. Having inherited a team sitting 11th in the Bundesliga standings, Kovac quickly helped Dortmund regain their momentum and secure qualification for the Champions League on the final matchday of the season.
Under Kovac’s guidance, Dortmund continued to make significant progress, finishing second in the Bundesliga last season with 73 points. The total ranked among the five highest point tallies in the club’s history, highlighting the team’s improvement under his management. His ability to restore consistency and guide the squad towards stronger results has played an important role in convincing the club to extend his stay.
Kovac’s Bundesliga record at Dortmund further demonstrates his impact. Across 53 league matches, he has collected 114 points, averaging 2.15 points per game. This is the highest points-per-match average achieved by any manager in the club’s history, strengthening the case for maintaining continuity in the coaching position as Dortmund pursue their long-term ambitions.
Borussia Dortmund’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, has praised Kovac’s contribution to the team’s development and his standing within the club. The contract extension is intended to provide greater stability while allowing the squad to build on the foundations established over the past year and a half. Both parties reached an agreement quickly, reflecting their shared commitment to continuing the project and improving the team’s performances.
Kovac is equally determined to keep Dortmund moving forward, with a clear focus on developing the team’s playing style, strengthening its collective identity, and maintaining high standards in training. Rather than becoming satisfied with recent achievements, he wants the squad to keep improving and make full use of its potential. With his contract secured until 2029, Kovac now has a longer-term opportunity to shape Dortmund’s future and help the club compete for major honours.
